Frame geometry¶
Two manufacturer references for comparing Pugsley frame sizes: Surly’s 2016 legacy page and its Gen. 2 page. These are separate references; neither establishes the geometry of every earlier Pugsley.
Measurements below are transcribed from Surly’s tables without recalculation. Linear measurements are in millimetres; angles are in degrees. Original size labels are retained.
How to read these tables¶
Start by choosing the reference version: 2016 legacy or Gen. 2. For an earlier bike, consult the dated catalogs; neither table below identifies every Pugsley year.
- Reach: the horizontal distance from the bottom-bracket center to the center of the top of the head tube. It describes the frame's forward length independently of the stem.
- Stack: the vertical distance between those same points. Together, reach and stack locate the front of the frame relative to the cranks.
- Effective top tube: the horizontal distance from the top of the head tube to the seat-tube centerline. This differs from the actual length of a sloping top tube.
- Standover: the top tube's height above the ground at the stated measurement point. Tire diameter and measurement method matter; read the source's footnotes before comparing figures.
These are frame comparisons, not a rider-size prescription. Stem length, handlebar width, and crank length describe fitted components; the Gen. 2 component rows are separated below without changing Surly's labels or values. Surly’s qualification: “All dimensions are preliminary and subject to change.” Standover is measured at the centre of the top tube with an approximately 740 mm diameter tire.

Earlier bikes and dated catalogs¶
Use the catalog collection to check a specific earlier model year. Differences in a table may reflect frame changes, measurement conventions, or revised documentation; do not assume that one table applies to a whole range of years.
