Wheelsets¶
This page covers complete wheelsets — the hub, rim, spokes and tire as a matched system — and how to choose one for a Pugsley.
What is a wheelset?¶
A wheelset is a matched pair of wheels (front and rear) built from a hub, rim and spokes and fitted with tires. Buying a complete wheelset (as opposed to building from parts) is convenient and often gives a better-balanced, warranty-backed product.
Choosing a wheelset¶
- Diameter: Pugsleys commonly run 26" and 29" (700c) wheelsets; choose based on rolling resistance and tire availability.
- Rim width: wider rims support larger tires and more stable sidewalls. For typical fat-bike use, 80–90 mm rims are common; narrower rims reduce footprint and tire volume.
- Hub type: confirm axle spacing (Pugsley uses 135 mm rear), brake mount (6-bolt or centerlock) and freehub body type (Shimano HG, SRAM XD, etc.).
- Spoke count and lacing: heavier duty builds (36–48 spokes per wheel) are standard for heavy loads, bikepacking and rough terrain.
Use-cases and examples¶
- Light touring / mixed terrain: durable rim (~80 mm), 36 spokes, tubeless-ready, mid-weight hub.
- Winter/snow: wider rim and tire combos for flotation; tubeless setups allow very low pressures.
- Fast/packed-snow: 26" with narrower, high-pressure-capable tires can be quicker.
Maintenance and serviceability¶
- Keep spokes tensioned and wheels regularly trued. Heavier use requires more frequent checks.
- Learn the axle/hub service for your hub model — bearings, freehub body, endcaps and axle adapters are the parts most commonly serviced.
Buying tips¶
- Match the hub freehub to your drivetrain (e.g., Shimano HG vs SRAM XD).
- Prefer tubeless-ready rims if you plan to run low pressures and reduce pinch flats.
- If unsure, a reputable wheelbuilder or vendor can recommend a build matched to your weight and intended use.
